Johnno — Chapter 43

Overview

The ushers abandon a bound, blindfolded Will in the Whispering Cave as a school-style prank. Johnno returns alone and confronts Will, revealing long-held resentments and failures. He accuses Will of betraying him over a TV opportunity and alludes to a dark school incident they hid. Johnno admits his whiskey brand is a sham and that he was fired, exposing his spiral and Will’s impunity.

Summary

The ushers carry a laughing, blindfolded Will to the Whispering Cave, binding his wrists and ankles with their ties in an old school ritual. They leave him on the shingle, planning to collect him later. Johnno pretends to peel off for a break, then doubles back alone.

With the others gone, Will drops the banter and demands release, worried about Jules and the wedding. Johnno refuses, casting the prank as payback and invoking the old “Survival” at Trevellyan’s, which Will avoided. Johnno’s agitation hardens into intent as he rejects Will’s matey tone.

Johnno reveals he spoke with Piers and has realized Will sabotaged his TV chance. He castigates himself for cowardice—both during his speech and years ago when he failed to tell teachers about what they did during Survival—implying a serious cover-up. He frames this confrontation as a belated reckoning.

Johnno then strips away his own facade: the Hellraiser whiskey is fake, the bottles rebadged supermarket malt with labels from his friend Alan. He admits he didn’t leave his wilderness job to launch the brand; he was fired for being stoned, which led to a client’s injury. He smokes to numb the trauma fixed at that school moment.

Johnno concludes that while his life stalled under the weight of the past, Will keeps taking what he wants and escaping consequences. Will grows wary and attempts to placate him, but Johnno’s resolve holds as the cave’s isolation turns the schoolboy “game” into a serious confrontation.
