Chapter 46: Tris

Tris leaves the Foxes’ Museum safe house for a planned meeting at Tobias’s apartment, noticing personal artifacts that hint at his inner life. Instead of Tobias, Shauna arrives, concerned, and brings Tris to Dauntless headquarters. Tris finds Tobias in a weapons room, trembling and dissociated as he practices, and gently redirects him to a quieter space.

In an old training room, Tobias coaches Tris through punching technique. The lesson shifts into intimacy, deepening their bond and grounding Tobias. As they pause, Tris notices a ribcage tattoo; Tobias admits he chose its painful placement to control pain. The moment is cut by his confession: Jeanine visited under a pretense to update the system but actually observed him in a fear simulation.

Tobias reveals Jeanine will likely publish a report confirming an Abnegation scandal, and Eric will expose Tobias as the abused Eaton child to control him. Feeling his Dauntless haven collapsing, Tobias mourns the loss of safety. Tris comforts him.

They move to the netted Dauntless entry shaft, reflecting on initiation and aptitudes. Tobias then proposes leaving Dauntless. He urges Tris to take him to Evelyn, trading his defection for factionless trust, so they can learn the factionless–Erudite plans. Tris wrestles with risking her new Fox belonging versus their broader mission.

Remembering wider stakes and collateral harm, Tris agrees. They decide that Tobias will abandon Dauntless, and Tris will deliver him to Evelyn to infiltrate the factionless, aligning their relationship with their larger goal of uncovering and stopping what’s coming.
