Chapter 20: Tris

Four and Christina arrive at the Rookery. After a tense standoff in which Four disarms Jove, Evelyn greets them coolly yet allows Christina to stay if she accepts the factionless rules: don’t get caught, do something useful, and no factions. Evelyn assigns Tris to escort Four out, irritating him.

As Tris leads Four through the tunnels, they trade barbs about loyalty and roles. Four reveals he is a Dauntless initiation instructor and simulation technician. Tris challenges his assumptions, saying Evelyn asked her to show him he had another option if unhappy in Dauntless.

Tris suddenly recognizes Four as Tobias Eaton, Evelyn’s son, realizing the source of their animosity. Four rejects the name and accuses Tris of manipulation, warning she doesn’t truly know Evelyn. Tris presses for information, but Four refuses and heads for the exit.

Outside, Dauntless patrol voices approach. Tris silences and shields Four until the patrol runs past. With the danger gone, Four leaves after thanking Tris for promising to look after Christina. Tris remains in the factionless stronghold with new insight into Four’s identity and the fraught history with Evelyn.
