Chapter 55: Tris
Overview
Tris reunites with Tobias, tells Andrew and Caleb that Natalie died, and pushes the group to stop the Dauntless simulation at its source. After a risky entry into Dauntless headquarters, they split to distract guards and access a back entrance. In the seemingly unguarded simulation room, Caleb betrays Tris and Tobias at gunpoint.
Summary
In a dark church, Tris informs Andrew and Caleb that Natalie died saving her. Overwhelmed but intent on action, Tris allows Tobias to bind her through-and-through arm wound with Marcus’s shirt and insists they must go to Dauntless headquarters to stop the simulation affecting Dauntless initiates.
The group boards a train. Tobias questions Caleb about the “update” he installed for Jeanine. They jump to a rooftop, then into the Dauntless net. Tris notices Caleb may have had blood on his back but he appears fine. Tobias leads them toward the simulation room through quiet, dim corridors.
Near the target, Tris overhears guards—Boots and the Mender—discussing the simulation’s duration. Deciding on a split approach, Tris gives her gun to Andrew; Andrew and Marcus remain to contain the guards if needed, while Tris, Tobias, and Caleb take a service entrance to the simulation room.
They find the back way unguarded and the simulation room empty, which troubles Tris. Tobias commands the Dauntless flame terminal to “Stop the simulation,” freezing the display. As he works, Caleb removes his jacket, draws a concealed gun, and aims at Tobias’s head, ordering Tris and Tobias to comply—revealing his betrayal at the critical moment.
