Chapter 60: Tris
Overview
Faced with Caleb using Tobias as a shield and preparing to kill him, Tris rejects surrender and shoots Caleb. The act resolves the standoff but devastates Tris. Tobias disarms her, shields her from the scene, and guides her away, marking a grim turning point in loyalty, guilt, and survival.
Summary
In a tense standoff, Tris faces Caleb aiming at Tobias and preparing to fire. Tobias gives Tris permission to refuse the choice, echoing her recent fear-simulation surrender, but Tris realizes in this moment she can act. Steeling herself, she focuses past Tobias and fires at Caleb.
The shot drops Caleb; the weapon clatters. Overwhelmed by the sound and shock, Tris experiences ringing and grief. Tobias calmly takes the gun, safeties it, and reassures her, his focus entirely on stabilizing Tris.
To spare Tris the sight, Tobias covers her eyes and walks her backward into the tunnel they used to arrive. As the reality of shooting her brother hits, Tris breaks into sobs and screams, and Tobias waits without rushing her until she is ready. When she nods, he takes her hand and leads her up the stairs and out, ending the confrontation but leaving Tris burdened by the cost of her decision.
