Chapter 48: Caleb
Overview
Caleb confesses to Jeanine that Natalie asked him to compare aptitude results with Erudite transfers. Jeanine reframes Natalie as a manipulator using Beatrice and Abnegation influence. She reveals the Memory Vault’s true power: erasing and rewriting memories, granting Abnegation alarming control over identity and the city.
Summary
On his favored Wednesday, Caleb assists Jeanine Matthews and admires her intellect and routine, from rapid-fire meetings to evening tea discussions. He resolves to confess a secret despite her kindness.
Caleb tells Jeanine that Natalie asked him—via Beatrice—to compare recent aptitude test results to the number of Erudite transfers, a task he did not complete. Jeanine remains calm, invites him to sit, and signals a difficult conversation.
Jeanine claims Natalie is not who she appears, describing how Natalie influences people under the guise of an Abnegation councilman’s wife. She suggests Natalie even nudged Beatrice to go factionless to keep eyes on them, positioning Natalie as a covert operator rather than a selfless parent.
Turning to the Memory Vault, Jeanine outlines reports of Dauntless guards leaving with memory gaps and argues the system must do more than record history. She explains that if a machine can store memories, it can also erase or alter them.
Jeanine details the stakes: removing a trauma leaves inexplicable feelings; erasing core memories could rewrite identity entirely—sibling bonds, faction choice, even childhood. She concludes that Abnegation wields intolerable power by controlling what people know, effectively controlling minds and the city.
