Chapter 12: Beatrice

Restless at night, Beatrice slips into the Abnegation courtyard and breaks the silence with Susan Black, who admits Robert had planned to choose Amity and regrets their final argument. Susan questions whether answers ease grief but hopes they might quiet her dreams. Perceptive, Susan recognizes Beatrice cannot pretend to belong in Abnegation forever.

Moved by Susan’s kindness and clarity, Beatrice accepts that living the wrong life is worse than factionlessness. The next day she passes her mother a hidden note—“I need answers”—then prepares to leave. After curfew, her mother arrives with supplies and hurries Beatrice to a train platform, proposing that tracing factionless thefts might reveal who used the stolen gun that killed Robert and why.

Beatrice’s mother instructs her how to jump a moving train with practiced ease, hinting at unexpected experience. Onboard, they meet Evelyn—alive, armed, and wearing clothing from multiple factions—whom Beatrice recognizes as the Amity-clad woman from the attack. Beatrice’s mother orders Evelyn to keep Beatrice safe, invoking an old debt.

As the train nears a station, Beatrice realizes her mother once belonged to Dauntless, a revelation that suddenly makes sense of her mother’s hidden skills. Her mother disembarks, leaving supplies and a plan for covert messages. Left with Evelyn, Beatrice rejects her old identity and chooses a new name—Tris—committing herself to uncovering the truth behind Robert’s murder.
