Chapter 47: Tris

Overview

Tris approaches Evelyn with a bullet and a calculated offer: help dethrone Marcus in exchange for delivering Tobias to the factionless. She leverages knowledge of Marcus’s abuse and reveals her failed memory excision. Evelyn discloses the factionless call themselves Hemlock and sets a clandestine meeting for Friday at 3 a.m.

Summary

Late at night, Tris goes to the Museum to find Evelyn. Passing through the bustling main hall, she greets Jove and enters the Mender’s workshop, noting Mae asleep nearby. After brief pleasantries with the Mender, Tris follows Evelyn to a balcony to speak privately.

Tris produces a factionless bullet she found helping Sly and uses it to pivot into a proposal. She reminds Evelyn that she kept contact with Tobias as asked and raises the topic of Marcus’s abuse, implying Evelyn must have suspected. Tris declares Marcus unfit for power and offers to help remove him, leveraging her Abnegation ties.

When Evelyn questions Tris’s value, Tris escalates: she can persuade Tobias to leave Dauntless for her. Despite guilt, Tris wields Evelyn’s love for her son as leverage, insisting she can deliver him if included in Evelyn’s plans. Pressed on motive, Tris shares that her father attempted to erase her memory—revealing she resisted it—broadening her aim to dismantle Abnegation’s power.

Evelyn, guarded but intrigued, reveals the factionless call themselves Hemlock. She instructs Tris to meet in the train yard on Friday at three in the morning to be introduced to others, adding that Tris should tell Tobias, “my dream is about to come true,” to help persuade him.

Tris departs alone through the Museum, shaken but resolved, realizing she has secured entry into Hemlock’s plans and set the stage to turn Tobias toward the factionless to strike at Marcus.
