Chapter 17: Tris

Overview

Back at the Rookery, Tris overhears Evelyn deem the detention-facility breakout “worth it” and then recruits Tris to advise a wavering Dauntless sentry. On a night train, Tris meets Four, reveals her doubts and reasons for leaving Abnegation, and challenges his loyalties. Four refuses commitments but agrees to consider joining the factionless.

Summary

Returning to the Rookery, Tris broods over Weaver’s accusation that Jove aided a prison break and notes celebratory Foxes. She overhears Evelyn say the breakout was “worth it” and to make amends to someone, then Evelyn approaches Tris directly.

Evelyn leads Tris through concealed tunnels and asks for help advising a recruit whose commitment is wavering. Framing Tris as someone who left by choice, Evelyn steers her toward acting as an intermediary rather than pressing herself.

They head to the Quincy station, where Evelyn reveals the recruit is a Dauntless sentry called Four—the same boy who helped Tris at the Choosing. Onboard, Four rejects the setup, insisting Evelyn manipulated Tris into coming, and prepares to leave at the next stop.

Pressed for time, Tris speaks candidly about not fitting anywhere, fearing she’s “broken,” and choosing to leave Abnegation so her discomfort could mean something. Her honesty keeps Four on the train past a station and softens his stance.

Four questions whether leaving means abandoning those he cares about; Tris argues caring doesn’t require living as someone inauthentic. Before disembarking, Four tells Tris to inform Evelyn he’ll think about it—no promise—then vanishes into the station, leaving Tris with a tentative success and deeper trust from Evelyn likely.
