Chapter 15: Tris

Overview

Evelyn tests Tris’s resolve, then unveils the Rookery, a sophisticated factionless hub with guilds and strict rules. Tris is refitted by the Mender, flagged for potential guild recruitment, and learns the Foxes sustain the community through theft. She resolves to seek the Foxes for answers about Robert’s murder and the stolen gun.

Summary

Evelyn brings Tris off the train to a decrepit church for a harsh night, then admits it was a test of commitment. Before dawn, Evelyn leads Tris to the Rookery, a restored factionless safe house and hub, revealing an organized community built over six years with three rules: don’t get caught, make yourself useful, and no factions.

Rory, a recent Amity defector, orients Tris and explains guilds—Healers, Travelers, Makers, and the elite Foxes. In the Mender’s workshop, Tris sheds Abnegation gray for mixed clothes, tries on faction styles, and learns the Mender and his sister Mae came from Candor. The Mender subtly flags Tris to Gretchen for potential guild interest, hinting Tris can “pass” in other roles.

At breakfast, Tris meets faction failures—Colin, Cassandra, and Miles—and hears how new arrivals are recruited. A Foxes team returns from an Amity raid with stolen supplies, justified as necessary until the community is self-sustaining. Rory outlines guild entrance tests and the Foxes’ banner-stealing contest requiring skill and stealth.

Confronted with the factionless’ hidden structure and theft, Tris weighs her discomfort against last night’s hunger and the citywide dependency on factionless labor. Recognizing the Foxes as a likely source of answers, Tris resolves to pursue them to learn who stole the wall gun, who killed Robert, and to what end.
