Chapter 18: Four
Overview
On Visiting Day, Four secretly meets Evelyn at an abandoned outpost. She warns of imminent upheaval and declares she will kill a man Four immediately understands, pressing him to join the factionless. Four refuses and leaves. That evening, dinner with Hana, Zeke, and Uriah grounds him, as Hana cautions him not to weaponize his discipline against himself.
Summary
On Visiting Day, the Pit teems with reunited families, which Four finds unbearable. He escapes with an early run and boards a westbound train, disembarking at a deserted outpost short of Amity to meet Evelyn.
At the rail above a pond, Four demands honesty about why Evelyn keeps pursuing him. Evelyn foretells a near-term upheaval and insists Four align with the “right” people. When Four challenges the violence at the Choosing attack, Evelyn calls it an unfortunate reaction to a sentry’s shot. Pushed to be specific, she declares, “I’m going to kill him,” which Four understands without her naming the target. Refusing to accept or endorse her plan, Four ends the meeting and leaves.
Back at Dauntless, Four drifts through Visiting Day crowds, then is swept into dinner at Hana’s after Zeke’s invitation-turned-insistence. In their warm, cluttered apartment, Four helps cook, trading easy banter with Zeke and Uriah.
As they prepare the meal, Hana asks after Uriah’s wellbeing beyond rankings, and Four reassures her. Hana then turns to Four, gently noting his heavy use of fear simulations and warning him not to use discipline as self-punishment. Her care prompts Four to reflect on Beatrice’s recent insight about not bending himself into an inauthentic shape for others. The evening closes with Four quietly returning to the cutting board, steadied but unresolved.
