Chapter 44: Four

Overview

Eric corners Four, threatening to expose his identity unless he complies, and announces Jeanine’s imminent “update” to Dauntless simulations. Four backs down to protect his position, then witnesses Will’s disturbing dove-death simulation, prompting concerns about deeper, symbolic fears and confirming his suspicion that Erudite is advancing a covert plan.

Summary

Four, exhausted and split between fixation on Tris and vigilance about Erudite, is confronted by Eric in the cafeteria. Eric needles Four about the chaotic initiate class and his unexplained absences, implying surveillance and threatening to reveal Four’s parentage to undermine him.

Four pushes back by hinting he saw Eric at Erudite, which prompts Eric to escalate: Jeanine Matthews will visit the Dauntless simulation room with Max to “update” the system. To avoid exposure and protect his position, Four submits, addressing Eric with forced respect, then channels his anger into training.

During the final fear simulation of the day, Four oversees Will’s test. Instead of typical academic or control fears, Will sees doves falling dead from the sky in an Amity field, which devastates him and unsettles Four.

Four explains that fear can be quiet and symbolic, pressing Will to consider deeper meaning—peace lost or something larger at stake. Will deflects, restoring his easy demeanor, and leaves. Four steels himself for the imminent arrival of Max, Eric, and Jeanine in the simulation room, sensing the visit is tied to Erudite’s larger plan.
