Chapter 4: Beatrice

Overview

Beatrice awakens inside a simulation maze, saves a child from encroaching smoke, and escapes by climbing and traversing the wall—actions that reveal awareness the test should suppress. Tori identifies Beatrice as Divergent, secretly records her result as Abnegation, and warns her to tell no one. Tori cuts the conversation short, sending Uriah to escort Beatrice home, underscoring the danger and secrecy surrounding Divergence.

Summary

Beatrice regains consciousness inside a vast brick maze. Hearing a child’s scream, she rushes toward it and finds a young Abnegation girl as black smoke barrels toward them. After a failed jump, Beatrice adapts, climbs protruding bricks, and reaches the wall’s top, guiding herself to visible double doors and exiting the simulation.

Back in the testing room, Beatrice coughs and reels from the fear she felt. Tori momentarily leaves to report an error, then returns unsettled, noting Beatrice performed actions the test should render impossible—recognizing the simulation, climbing and walking the wall—implying unusual awareness and control.

Tori explains that such resistance marks Beatrice as Divergent. She interprets Beatrice’s choices as fitting Erudite (problem-solving), Dauntless (decisiveness), and Abnegation (saving the child), and instructs her to choose among those. For safety, Tori logs Beatrice’s official result as Abnegation and warns her to tell no one, hinting that powerful people view Divergence as a threat.

When Beatrice presses for details, Tori refuses, ends the conversation, and calls over Uriah to escort Beatrice home, framing Divergence as an immediate danger and leaving Beatrice with secrecy and uncertainty just before the Choosing Ceremony.
