Chapter 11: Beatrice
Overview
Beatrice reels after a failed memory excision and confides in her mother, who reveals long-standing knowledge of Evelyn’s survival and warns that Divergent are killed. Beatrice is offered stark choices: remain in Abnegation and pretend, or defect to a better-organized factionless network. Suspecting a larger factionless plan and that Robert wasn’t the intended victim, Beatrice considers leaving to uncover the truth.
Summary
Shaken by the attempted memory excision, Beatrice isolates herself during donation-center work, replaying her father’s relief and Marcus Eaton’s complicity. Her mother slips Beatrice a note to stay late, and outside, asks if the excision worked. Beatrice admits it failed.
Beatrice’s mother reveals she has known since before the funeral that Evelyn Eaton is alive and suggests Abnegation leaders concealed Evelyn’s flight because of what she knew. She explains Beatrice’s resistance is innate and dangerous—Divergent are killed if discovered—and urges absolute secrecy.
Pressed to choose a path, Beatrice weighs pretending the excision worked and advancing within Abnegation to change it from inside versus defecting entirely. Her mother discloses a contact among a more capable, hidden factionless network, warning that recent calm masked their finding new outlets for discontent.
Together they reconsider the Choosing attack: the theft of a gun and the deliberate drop from the rafters suggest planning; Robert Black may not have been the intended target. Though her mother insists it isn’t her responsibility, Beatrice feels compelled to seek answers for Robert and considers defecting to learn the factionless plan.
Overwhelmed yet resolute, Beatrice acknowledges Abnegation won’t expand to fit her “singular mind.” She ends the meeting leaning toward leaving—either to forget or to find the truth—while her mother promises help if Beatrice chooses to pursue answers.
