Chapter 14: Four

Four exits a fear simulation atop the Hub, forcing himself to jump despite long-standing acrophobia. He centers himself in the Dauntless simulation room, reflecting on fear-facing as the faction’s core, when Uriah rushes in reporting trouble in the training room.

In the arena, Peter has cornered and beaten Christina. Four halts the assault, sends Christina to the med bay with Uriah, and challenges Peter. Using close-quarters techniques, Four disables Peter without serious injury, publicly warning him to stop targeting fellow initiates.

Eric appears and drags Four into a darker practice room, mocking his “method” and reframing initiation as ruthless competition. Four argues Peter’s brutality is escalating and asks for punitive ranking. Eric rejects the appeal, intimates Four lacks power and resolve, and threatens to remove him if he “teaches weakness.”

That evening, Shauna and Zeke visit Four’s apartment; they joke about Eric to defuse tension. When Shauna opens a cabinet, a slip of paper falls: “Last train, where and when we last met, on the safest day.” Four lies that it’s a nonsensical dream note, but privately reveals it is from the factionless, who are attempting to recruit him.
