Chapter 35: Tris
Overview
After leaving Erudite, Tris follows Eric to Dauntless territory and sees him armed, hinting at non-factionless involvement in the attacks. She overhears Eric pressing an unseen contact for a name and referencing a hard deadline, confirming a broader conspiracy. When Tris tries to slip away, Eric corners and restrains her.
Summary
Shawn escorts Tris out of Erudite via a back freight elevator at six o’clock, completing her Fox test by lasting an hour without arrest. In the alley, Tris spots Dauntless leader Eric leaving, now carrying a gun. The sight makes Tris question her assumption that the factionless led the attack and consider that other factions may control weapons from the wall.
Deciding to investigate, Tris races to board the train ahead of Eric and changes into black clothing from a factionless emergency bag to blend in. She disembarks near Dauntless headquarters and shadows Eric, keeping him in view while seeking a closer look at the weapon.
Eric avoids the main entrance and meets an unseen contact on a back stairwell. From hiding, Tris overhears Eric insist that “time is running out,” demand a name, and mention a need to maintain appearances and a hard deadline. The exchange confirms to Tris that Eric is part of a larger covert plan unrelated to the factionless’ behavior she has witnessed.
When Eric departs, Tris tries to merge with nearby Dauntless but is spotted. She leads him toward the Pit to avoid an exposed confrontation. Before she can disappear, Eric seizes her, slams her against the stone wall, and demands to know why she is there, ending the chapter with Tris caught.
