Chapter 58: Tris
Overview
Tris is plunged into a fear simulation of a stormy field and attacked by a flock of crows. Overwhelmed, she chooses acceptance over resistance, repeating that nothing can be done. The pain recedes and the scene shifts, signaling a breakthrough in coping with fear while under control.
Summary
Tris awakens in a wild, storm-darkened field, unlike the orderly Amity farms she once saw. A lone crow watches her, and distant squawking grows into an approaching flock. Though nothing visibly threatens her yet, dread builds, and she recognizes she is inside a fear simulation.
The crows dive, swarming Tris with claws and beaks. She curls into a ball, panicking as they peck her arms, neck, and face. With no weapon or escape, she sobs and struggles, but every movement exposes more of her to the attack, intensifying her fear and pain.
Realizing resistance is futile, Tris repeats to herself that there is nothing she can do. She deliberately uncurls, exposes herself to the birds, and lets the pain wash over her. As she accepts rather than fights, her awareness drifts from the agony, and the simulation shifts; she suddenly feels stone beneath her knees, signaling a transition or exit.
