Chapter 13: Caleb
Overview
Caleb completes Erudite’s second initiation test—a mirror labyrinth—with teammates Fernando and Quinn, earning a dorm bed and entry to Erudite life. A news brief publicly exposes Abnegation’s Penalty of Silence, which Caleb confirms, straining his loyalties. Touring research labs with Cara, he glimpses aptitude-test development and embraces Erudite’s intellectual welcome.
Summary
Caleb enters the second stage of Erudite initiation with Fernando and Quinn, facing a mirror-filled labyrinth. Overstimulated by endless reflections, Caleb initially falters, but, guided by their memorized route and Quinn’s humming, he focuses on his feet and leads them through his section. They finish successfully and secure spots in the dormitory.
Settling into his new space, Caleb marvels at freely available books and the autonomy to read for interest, feeling profound relief. During a building-wide news brief, he notes robust Erudite reporting: factionless attacks, a foiled Hall of Factions break-in, infrastructure delays, and, most painfully, a report exposing Abnegation’s Penalty of Silence and allegations of physical discipline.
Peers turn to Caleb for confirmation. He acknowledges the Penalty of Silence as accurate, though he cannot confirm physical punishment, prompting debate about the harm of enforced silence. Comparing Abnegation’s methods to Erudite’s “Situational Reexamining,” Caleb reflects on Beatrice’s past humiliation and worries for her.
The tour continues into research laboratories. Drawn to a brain-scan lab, Caleb meets Cara, who explains ongoing refinements to the aptitude test, including embedding directions within simulations. As they watch neural activity shift across brain regions, Cara offers study recommendations and notes Jeanine Matthews’s support for simulation research.
Welcomed by Cara’s enthusiasm and Erudite’s culture of shared knowledge, Caleb realizes the faction is not cold but invigorating. He feels wonder and a burgeoning sense of belonging in Erudite’s intellectual community.
