Chapter 5: Beatrice
Overview
Uriah walks Beatrice home, and they detour into the Hall of Factions, confronting the symbolism and stakes of the Choosing Ceremony. Beatrice weighs Erudite curiosity against Dauntless courage and fears hurting her parents. That night, her father’s affection and Caleb’s counsel push her toward making a choice she can live with, while she hides her Divergence.
Summary
Uriah escorts Beatrice home, joking to prolong his escape from school. As they walk through the city’s abandoned buildings and under the train tracks, Beatrice notices signs of factionless squatting and recalls Abnegation views on the factionless. Near the marsh, Uriah suggests slipping into the Hall of Factions through a back door.
Inside the Choosing room, they study the five bowls and banners. Uriah explains the blood-cutting ritual and notes its brutality when switching factions. Beatrice reflects on Erudite’s call to answer every question and on Dauntless’s creed of ordinary bravery, contrasting those pulls with her father’s belief in Abnegation’s duty to everyone. The weight of possibly leaving her parents tightens her doubt, and they leave before being discovered.
That evening, Beatrice’s parents serve private meals for contemplation before Choosing. Her father kisses her head and whispers love, deepening her conflict. In her room, Caleb taps their old window line to talk; he asks about her early departure after testing. Beatrice longs to confide about Tori’s warning and her Divergence but lies, citing queasiness.
Caleb admits he is also nervous and recalls their childhood accident and their mother’s advice to “check yourself before you check your sister.” He reframes it: they must choose lives they can live with. Beatrice accepts the counsel, sensing Caleb suspects she may leave Abnegation. They part with mutual affection, both bracing for tomorrow’s choice while Beatrice keeps her Divergence secret.
