Chapter 41: Tris

Overview

Tris enters Four’s fear landscape and discovers he has only four fears, confirming both are Divergent. She helps him face heights, claustrophobia, shooting a faceless woman, and Marcus’s abuse. After erasing records, they share painful truths about Evelyn, Abnegation, and trust, culminating in a mutual confession and kiss. Tris proposes meeting someone who can help them both.

Summary

In the fear simulation room, Four reveals the final Dauntless test and asks Tris to enter his fear landscape with him. On the Hub rooftop, Tris realizes Four is Divergent when he remains lucid and chooses to jump with her, confirming they both are Divergent.

The scene shifts to a claustrophobic box where Four hyperventilates; Tris grounds him with touch and breathing, and he forces an exit. In a blank white room, he shoots a faceless Abnegation woman, steady in action but shaken by the aftermath. The final fear takes them through an Abnegation apartment to Marcus Eaton, who raises a belt; Tris shields Four and the scene ends.

Back in the simulation room, Tris notes Four has only four fears, learning the origin of his nickname. They erase the record and walk outside. Four confides that after Evelyn left, Marcus focused his abuse on him; Evelyn returned caring only about hurting Marcus. He fears public exposure would strip him of identity and safety, and might not be believed.

Tris shares that Abnegation leadership tried to erase her memory of seeing Evelyn after the Choosing attack, and that being Divergent protected her. Disillusioned with every faction’s failings, she says the factionless have taught her to trust herself. When Four asks what she wants, Tris chooses him; they kiss, admit mutual desire, and she tells him there is someone she wants him to meet who can help them both.
