Chapter 62: Tris

Overview

Tris, Four, and their companions ride a rain-soaked train toward Amity, seeking refuge. Tris discovers a compass hidden in her mother’s locket, pointing to a star and promising her mother’s journal. Four promises to be worthy of Tris’s sacrifice, and Tris begins to process her grief.

Summary

Tris and her group ride the train away from the city toward Amity headquarters, choosing it as a potential safe haven. As she watches the overgrown outskirts roll by in the rain, Tris reflects on the natural world reclaiming the abandoned buildings.

Shifting, Tris notices her mother’s locket and opens it, expecting a photograph. Instead, she finds a compass marked only with a single star. Remembering her mother’s words, Tris realizes the locket is a tool to find her mother’s journal, and she tucks it away.

Tobias approaches, kneels, and quietly promises, “I’ll try to be worth what I cost you,” acknowledging Tris’s devastating choice to save him. Tris embraces him and assures him he already is, grounding herself in his presence amid physical pain and the memory of recent losses.

As the train carries them toward Amity, Tris becomes acutely aware of her body, the locket’s weight, and the wind. The moment of connection with Tobias steadies her, and the first stirrings of grief begin to surface as they head toward uncertain refuge and the new lead of her mother’s journal.
