Overview

Summary
Riding the train after helping relocate the factionless to the Museum, Tris reflects on preparation versus bravery and the hidden scale of factionless life. She heads to the Abnegation donation center, where her mother welcomes her. Tris asks about the Dauntless raid and Mae’s custody case, learning hearings for Candor now occur at Candor headquarters due to inter-faction distrust.
Tris’s mother admits imposing the Penalty of Silence for Tris’s protection, but withholds broader secrets, promising only to consider revealing more. She agrees to involve Tris’s father so he can speak with Jack Kang during deliberations, acknowledging irregularities in truth serum with Divergent.
