Chapter 9: Caleb
Overview
Caleb struggles through Erudite’s first initiation test, a labyrinth riddle, and finally solves it by recognizing the answer as “ignorance.” One Erudite initiate fails and is effectively cut from the program, underscoring harsh stakes. Caleb meets peers and instructor Cara, then endures Jeanine Matthews’s public slight, strengthening his resolve to prove himself.
Summary
Caleb stalls at Erudite’s initiation labyrinth as others pass by whispering their riddle answers to a stone lion. Overheated and panicked, he recognizes his Abnegation-honed straightforwardness hinders abstract thinking. After Felicity and a Candor boy succeed, only Caleb and a hyperventilating Erudite boy remain.
Caleb forces himself to calm down using deliberate breathing, recalling his father’s guidance and focusing on bodily sensation to quiet his mind. Rereading the riddle backward, he realizes the solution—“ignorance.” He answers correctly and advances, leaving the Erudite boy behind.
In the Exchange dining hall, Caleb meets Fernando and Anna amid lively debate about logic, dreams, and storytelling. Instructor Cara announces that the lagging Erudite initiate will likely fail out and warns that all privileges must be earned daily in Erudite, setting unforgiving expectations.
Jeanine Matthews arrives, commends Fernando for finishing first, and then singles out Caleb as last, dismissing Abnegation for “rigid thinking.” Publicly slighted yet determined, Caleb resolves to disprove her judgment by succeeding in the trials ahead.
