Chapter 16: Tris

Overview

Tris fails to glean secrets from the Foxes, is caught by Gretchen, and is challenged to qualify on merit, prompting her decision to enter their contest. As she trains and learns factionless infrastructure at a water-treatment plant, a Dauntless officer accuses Jove of aiding a detention break. Jove denies it, but the confrontation exposes rising faction–factionless hostility and raises stakes for Tris’s infiltration.

Summary

Over several days, Tris searches for the Foxes who smuggled food but cannot spot them; their disguises and forgettable presence make them elusive. Busy with survival—runs at dawn, chores, and nightly field trips—Tris learns the factionless systems and guilds, yet remains focused on who took the gun that killed Robert.

Before dawn, Tris hides in a dining-room cabinet to eavesdrop on a Foxes meeting. Gretchen discovers her and, with Boots, teases Tris’s flimsy lie but implies recruitment is possible if Tris proves herself. Though embarrassed, Tris recognizes spying won’t work and considers joining the Foxes on merit.

During a group train run, Colin bluntly tells Tris she needs strength and endurance to compete in the Foxes’ contest. The exchange stings but motivates her. She commits internally to infiltrate by becoming one of them.

Jove leads the factionless to a Dauntless-area water-treatment plant. Inside, Jove and Carr teach Tris Step One of purification—lugging coagulant, starting the “spinners,” and repeating across tanks. A sudden bang triggers Tris’s memory of Robert’s death, but she steadies herself and continues.

Dauntless officer Weaver halts operations, announcing a detention-facility breakout and accusing Jove of orchestrating a diversion by bringing trainees. Jove denies any involvement and challenges Dauntless prejudice. Weaver issues a veiled threat about cutting paper-goods payment, rattling Jove before the sentries withdraw. Work resumes under strain, and suspicion between factions intensifies as Tris’s path toward the Foxes clarifies.
