Chapter 22: Tris

Tris and Christina deepen their partnership to become Foxes. While Christina heals, she studies strategy and faction behavior, and Tris drills striking and footwork. They decide to seek Fox banners in Candor and Abnegation, avoiding Dauntless. Their plan runs parallel to Rory and Colin’s aim at Erudite and Amity.

Seeing Tris’s disadvantage in self-defense, Colin brings her to the roof to try a makeshift dart gun. Using Abnegation meditation to steady her breath and focus, Tris quickly improves and strikes near the bull’s-eye, revealing a practical, compensating skill she can present to the Foxes.

At a communal Feast Day, Jove announces that Dauntless had shorted the Rookery on toilet paper; Fox operatives, including Boots and Gretchen, retaliated by stealing a supply from Dauntless headquarters. The Rookery celebrates, further cementing Foxes’ bold reputation and the community’s unity.

During the dancing, Tris warms to camaraderie with Colin, Rory, and Christina. The Mender coaxes Tris onto the floor, urging her to claim personal freedom beyond Abnegation restraint. Tris relaxes, lets her hair down, and momentarily embraces belonging and levity.

The night ends abruptly when armed Dauntless sentries surge up from the tunnel with guns raised, halting the celebration and threatening the fragile safety of the Rookery.
