Chapter 30: Tris
Overview
Recovering from injuries, Tris meets her mother, who reveals a secret research agenda and asks Tris to relay a request to Caleb: compare aptitude tests to faction transfers. Reconsidering her Dauntless identity, Tris solves the Ferris wheel as a puzzle, repairs its controls, and retrieves the Fox banner.
Summary
Two days after the fire, Tris waits behind the donation center, aching from smoke damage and a burn that limits her left arm. Her mother rushes out, fiercely relieved and proud, but her worry and anger hint at strain at home.
Natalie Prior asks Tris for help: deliver a message to Caleb. Barred from Erudite headquarters by Jeanine’s new mandates, Natalie wants Caleb to compare aptitude test results with faction transfer data to test a theory. She withholds the details to avoid bias, urging Tris to trust her.
Tris agrees, uneasy about feeling like an errand runner yet motivated by recent losses. She reflects on Dauntless after its raids and expulsions, questioning whether the faction truly fits her.
At the Ferris wheel, Tris finds the Fox banner still hanging. Unable to climb with one arm and fragile lungs, she reframes the task as a puzzle. Inspecting the control panel, she locates and reconnects a loose wire, powers the system, and rotates the wheel to bring the banner within reach.
Tris climbs partway, secures the slippery banner, and descends safely. Laughing at the winking fox emblem, she carries the banner away, newly confident in defining bravery as ingenuity and problem-solving rather than reckless stunts.
