Chapter 59: Four
Overview
Four deletes the simulation data, realizing Jeanine can frame him for the attack and that Caleb plans to kill him to erase a witness. Tris survives her fear simulation and confronts Caleb with a gun. Caleb seizes Four as a shield, forcing Tris into an impossible choice. Four urges Tris not to shoot, prioritizing her family over himself.
Summary
Four finishes deleting the simulation data and immediately realizes Jeanine’s narrative will frame him as the rogue Dauntless responsible for the attack. He understands that leaving a witness jeopardizes the cover-up, and that Caleb, committed to his mission, now intends to kill him.
While Tris writhes in a fear simulation nearby, Four challenges Caleb’s cold logic. Caleb claims allegiance to his father and the operation’s success, insisting Four’s death is an unfortunate necessity. Four counters that Tris will never accept the story, shaking Caleb’s certainty.
Tris overcomes the simulation by surrendering, emerging calm and decisive. She grabs her gun and aims at Caleb. Caleb reacts by dragging Four in front of him as a human shield, placing the gun’s line of fire against Four’s head, and declares he must finish the plan to save their father.
Recognizing Tris’s conflict—torn between love for Four and loyalty to her brother—Four decides to make the choice easier for her. He tells Tris she doesn’t have to shoot, urging her to value people over fragile plans, even if it endangers him, and waits for her to lower the gun.
