Chapter 49: Four

Overview

Four and Tris finalize a plan to meet Evelyn’s factionless radicals, and Four commits to leaving Dauntless. He confides in Zeke and Shauna, who support him. After Eric’s taunts trigger a violent outburst, Four sleeps, then inexplicably feels compelled to assemble the initiates and boards an unusually halted train, signaling a looming operation.

Summary

Before dawn, Four meets Tris on the train. Tris confirms Evelyn has agreed to introduce them to the factionless radicals at the Museum train yard at 3 a.m. They consider running but accept the city’s constraints. They affirm their commitment to each other, and Tris relays Evelyn’s cryptic hint that her “dream” is about to come true.

Four returns to Dauntless to pack, leaving only his mother’s quilt for one last night. That evening he visits Zeke’s apartment, where Shauna is also present, to finally reveal his real identity as Tobias Eaton. Zeke and Shauna already know and accept him. Four explains Evelyn is alive, leads the factionless, and that Eric will soon make Dauntless untenable. They promise continued friendship and support even if he becomes factionless, and they share an awkward but sincere farewell embrace.

On his way back, Four encounters Eric, who sneers about the simulation room and deliberately evokes Four’s abusive past. Four snaps and slams Eric against a wall. Eric threatens retribution; Four refuses to be intimidated and walks away, intent on leaving Dauntless.

After brief, heavy sleep, Four awakens with a powerful, inexplicable urgency. Instead of heading for Tris, he is compelled toward the train platform to meet the initiates. There, with Eric observing and multiple initiates present, the train unusually stops at the station. Four leads them aboard, the abnormal halt and his compulsion signaling that a larger, orchestrated action is beginning.
