Chapter 44

Overview

Thomas and Minho run Section Eight and confirm the Maze no longer changes, finding no exits despite exhaustive searching. Thomas and Teresa successfully communicate telepathically, hinting they knew each other before. Strange Griever behavior suggests the Creators are ending the game, pushing the Gladers to rely on the code.

Summary

Thomas and Minho push deep into Section Eight, noting with Thomas’s watch that under gray skies the Maze walls haven’t moved since the day before. They forgo mapping to reach the end quickly, then plan to backtrack and search for overlooked clues.

During the run, Teresa speaks telepathically from the Glade. Thomas tests responding and confirms two-way communication, though both develop headaches. Teresa suggests their brains were altered before arrival and that they likely knew each other, referencing her message “WICKED is good” and the emerging code. Thomas is unsettled but encouraged, then she breaks contact.

At the far dead end, Thomas and Minho eat and begin meticulous searches: checking ground, walls, and ivy. They find nothing but another “World In Catastrophe—Killzone Experiment Department” sign, which Minho dismisses. Repeated sweeps yield no secret passages or mechanisms.

Near midnight, Grievers appear sporadically, sometimes rushing past without attacking. The creatures’ erratic, nonconfrontational passes rattle Thomas but cause no fight. As they trudge back, Minho concludes the Creators are signaling there’s no escape and want the Runners to carry that message home.

Deflated, Thomas agrees to return. They see no more Grievers on the way back. Thomas resolves to focus on deciphering the code, accepting that the Maze’s static walls offer no path out.
