Chapter 61
Overview
During a frantic bus evacuation, a rescuer explains the sun flares, the Flare, WICKED’s experiments, and the Scorch, inviting the Gladers to oppose WICKED. The group reaches a brightly furnished dorm, receives care and food, and finally sleeps. Thomas mourns Chuck yet feels safe for the first time.
Summary
As rain batters the bus, Thomas watches ruined towns flash by. Flare-ravaged people bang on the vehicle, but the driver speeds on. Thomas and Teresa question a woman rescuer, who warns their memories may never fully return and begins to explain what happened to the world.
The woman recounts unprecedented sun flares that incinerated satellites and scorched the Earth, killing millions and collapsing ecosystems. A resultant sickness—the Flare—spread beyond South America. Only the wealthy receive treatment, no cure is known, though rumors from the Andes persist.
She reveals the Gladers were chosen orphans in a calculated WICKED experiment to study brains under extreme catalysts, hoping to find people who could help defeat the Flare. She describes the disease’s progression—delusions, primal behavior, loss of humanity—and vows her group will fight WICKED and stop the tests. She mentions the Scorch, a deadly equatorial wasteland filled with Flare-consumed savages, and invites Thomas and Teresa to join them.
Hours later, the bus stops at a colorful dormitory. The rescuers settle the nineteen boys and Teresa into bunks, provide supplies, and serve pizza. Amid relief and tentative happiness, Thomas remains hollowed by Chuck’s death but, for the first time since the Box, feels a measure of safety as everyone goes to sleep.
