Chapter 53

After the Gathering, Newt tells Thomas and Teresa that all the Keepers have agreed to attempt the escape through the Griever Hole. Though wary of making the “Greenie” the face of the plan, Newt tasks Thomas and Teresa with handling the code while he rallies the groups, anticipating resistance from some Gladers and from a fearful Alby.

Newt begins persuading the camp while Thomas and Teresa consider the risks. Despite doubts, Thomas insists the choice is the same either way: someone will die whether they stay or go. Newt resolves to get Alby on board, even by bluffing hope. Arguments break out across the Glade, but momentum builds toward leaving.

Preparations escalate: Frypan organizes food, Chuck and Teresa distribute water, and Newt and Thomas hand out improvised weapons. Minho leads Runners to the Cliff, confirming the invisible Griever Hole still functions, and they decide to wait for night so most Grievers will be outside the Hole when they attack.

In the Deadheads, Thomas and Teresa finalize the plan: they will enter the code while Newt and Minho serve as backups if needed. Discussing WICKED triggers their realization that it stands for World In Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department. With dread over potential bloodshed but no better options, they commit to fighting through, entering the code, opening the door, and confronting the Creators.
