Chapter 62
Overview
In the rescue dorm, Teresa is placed in a separate room while Thomas bunks with Minho, Newt, and Frypan. Thomas and Minho question the fate of those left in the Maze and whether they are now safe. Thomas mind-speaks with Teresa, processing Chuck’s death and their lost past, ending the night with guarded hope.
Summary
Thomas settles into a bunk with Minho above him, while Newt and Frypan lie nearby. Staff separate Teresa into another room before she can say goodbye, leaving Thomas immediately missing her.
Minho quietly asks what happened to the Gladers who stayed behind. Thomas, exhausted, admits they likely face Grievers swarming the Glade. When Minho asks if they are safe with the rescuers, Thomas commits to believing they are.
As Thomas drifts toward sleep, he initiates mind-speech with Teresa. They trade light banter, then confront the weight of Chuck’s death. Teresa urges Thomas to release his guilt, insisting Chuck chose to save him and that Thomas should not waste the sacrifice.
Thomas confesses his desire to remember their past and senses Teresa feels the same. They wonder about tomorrow, say good night, and as the lights go out, Thomas turns over with an almost-smile—an imperfect but real moment of hope after grief.
