Chapter 59
Overview
The Gladers confront WICKED as a woman and a hooded boy enter; the boy is revealed as a controlled Gally. Declaring a final Variable, WICKED triggers Gally to throw a knife at Thomas. Chuck jumps in and is killed, pushing Thomas into a violent breakdown. The moment exposes WICKED’s manipulation and deepens the stakes through devastating loss.
Summary
The survivors face a wall of observing adults behind windows. An alarm sounds and a door opens, admitting a woman in WICKED uniform and a hooded boy. The woman coldly congratulates the Gladers, noting the trials went according to plan, and reveals the boy as Gally.
Minho demands answers while the woman dismisses him, calling this the Maze Trials. She announces a final Variable. Gally trembles and, struggling to speak, says they can control him. His body relaxes as if overridden.
Gally suddenly draws a dagger and hurls it at Thomas. Thomas freezes, but Chuck dives in front of him. The blade buries in Chuck’s chest; he convulses, bleeds, and, with dying breaths, asks Thomas to find his mother before going still.
Overwhelmed by grief and rage, Thomas attacks Gally, tackling him to the floor and pummeling his face until Minho and Newt drag Thomas away. The fury drains, replaced by devastation as Thomas returns to Chuck’s body.
Thomas collapses, clutching his friend and sobbing. Teresa tries to comfort him, but Thomas can only repeat that he had promised to take Chuck home, while the Gladers absorb the shock of WICKED’s manipulation and the cost of survival.
