Chapter 2

Overview

Thomas is introduced to the Glade and its hierarchy as Alby asserts control and Newt tempers the explanation. Thomas learns a formal Tour will come tomorrow and senses real danger from mentions of the Cliff and a recent death. The chapter ends with a terrifying scream from the wooden building, escalating stakes.

Summary

Thomas is pulled from the Box into a vast stone-walled courtyard filled with dozens of boys. Disoriented, he studies the Glade’s farms, pens, and a dilapidated wooden building, while the boys’ slang and a hostile glare from one kid unsettle him. A dark-skinned boy, Alby, emerges as the leader.

Alby promises a Tour tomorrow and urges Thomas to stay calm, introducing the Glade as their home. Thomas refuses a handshake and, angry and confused, demands answers. Alby snaps, warning that too much truth would overwhelm him, and mentions the Cliff and survival, implying mortal danger.

Newt intervenes, easing tensions and introducing himself. Alby admits Thomas is the first newcomer since Nick was killed, underscoring the peril. With the Box arriving late, Alby postpones the Tour, instructs Newt to find Thomas a bed, and says a “new life” starts tomorrow as the Runners will return by nightfall.

After most boys disperse, Thomas wrestles with fear and hopelessness, questioning whether the Glade is a prison. Newt reassures him and assigns Chuck to handle sleeping arrangements. A sudden, high-pitched scream from the wooden building interrupts them, and Newt runs to help the Med-jacks, leaving Thomas shaken and alone.
