Chapter 42
Overview
Thomas leads Minho, Newt, and Teresa to reconstruct the destroyed Map data using wax paper overlays. By stacking daily traces from all eight sections, they uncover a hidden letter—F—proving the Maze encodes a written message. This breakthrough validates Teresa’s “code” claim and gives the Gladers a concrete decoding method.
Summary
In the weapons basement, Minho reveals a hidden storage closet containing boxes with the preserved Map sets. Thomas proposes that the wall movements might spell words rather than form a navigational map. Despite skepticism from Minho and Newt, Thomas insists they compare all eight sections by day, not each section across days.
Thomas requests wax paper, markers, and cutting tools; Frypan reluctantly surrenders his wax paper rolls. Thomas, Teresa, Minho, and Newt trace the last several days’ Maps from each section onto wax paper, labeling them carefully. Thomas attempts silent communication with Teresa, who seems to understand his plan and works with intense focus.
After enough tracing, Thomas arranges one sheet from each section for the same day and stacks them, aligning the Mazes. The overlapping lines form a checkered pattern, but darker recurring paths in the center resolve into a clear shape. The composite reveals a single letter—F—confirming that the Maze encodes a written message and validating their new approach.
Who Appears
- ThomasDrives the new strategy; organizes tracing and overlay of Maps, revealing the hidden letter F.
- MinhoProvides hidden Map storage; initially skeptical but assists cutting wax paper and tracing.
- TeresaQuietly supports Thomas’s idea; shares a brief telepathic moment; helps trace Maps leading to the discovery.
- NewtSkeptical yet cooperative; helps organize the tracing and pushes the group to test the theory.
- FrypanReluctantly gives up wax paper needed for the mapping experiment.
