Chapter 30
Overview
Thomas serves his day in the Slammer, reinforcing Glade order despite his heroics. Chuck visits with food and confides deep homesickness, prompting Thomas to promise to get him home. Meanwhile, normal operations resume, Alby recovers, and Gally remains missing—updates that reset tensions and sharpen Thomas’s resolve.
Summary
Newt locks Thomas in the Slammer to enforce order after Thomas’s rule-breaking rescue. The cell contains only a wobbly chair, leaving Thomas bored and frustrated as hours drag by and his attempts to recall memories fail.
At noon, Chuck brings lunch and news: the Runners are back in the Maze, work has resumed, Alby is up and functioning, and there is still no sign of Gally. Thomas worries Alby may reveal what he said privately after the Changing-induced episode.
Chuck unexpectedly opens up about homesickness and the pain of not remembering his family. Thomas admits he cried after surviving the Griever attack and tells Chuck not to feel ashamed of tears, acknowledging the emotional strain they all face.
When Chuck wonders if he truly has parents who miss him, Thomas is shaken by anger at whoever stole their lives. He comforts Chuck with a vivid assurance that his mother is grieving for him and promises, as a newly named Runner, to solve the Maze and get Chuck home.
After Chuck leaves, Thomas paces the cell and renews his vow privately, turning punishment into resolve while the Glade stabilizes around uncertain threats—especially Gally’s disappearance.
