Summary
After the alarm blares, Thomas and Chuck join a gathering at the Box doors. Chuck reveals failed attempts to follow the Box—an empty abyss, and a past volunteer cut in half by something unseen—underscoring the danger. Gally eyes Thomas with hostility as Alby and Newt arrive, exhausted.
Alby and Newt open the Box and react with shock. The crowd surges until Alby calms them. He notes the strangeness of two arrivals in two days and looks pointedly at Thomas, heightening suspicion.
Newt announces it’s a girl, stunning the boys. Believing she’s dead, they lower Alby and Newt to retrieve her. Thomas hangs back, unsettled, but notices her strikingly pale, black-haired appearance.
Alby and Newt call Thomas forward and press him on whether he recognizes the girl. Thomas insists he doesn’t, though Alby doubts the coincidence, linking her arrival to Thomas and raising tension.
Suddenly, the girl bolts upright, gasping, eyes blazing. She declares, “Everything is going to change,” then collapses, her fist rigid with a crumpled note.
