Chapter 36
Overview
Thomas hides but is found by the newly awakened Teresa, who shares fragmented memories, confirms a telepathic link, and reveals the phrase “WICKED is good.” She insists she triggered the Ending but can’t explain how. When Newt and Alby confront them, the Gladers discover the Doors haven’t closed—an unprecedented, dire escalation.
Summary
Thomas slips away to his secluded spot, overwhelmed by Teresa’s earlier telepathic contact. Teresa finds him there, fully awake and lucid. They speak, and though Teresa can’t recall specifics, she recognizes Thomas on an emotional level and confirms she can speak to him in his mind. She likens the ability to a learned skill remembered without the lesson.
They compare fragments: Teresa claims vague knowledge that she and Thomas were important and used for a purpose, that she triggered “the Ending,” and that the Maze is a code, though she can’t explain how she knows. She reveals words inked on her arm—“WICKED is good”—then rubs them off, asking Thomas not to forget. Thomas notes the beetle blades bear the word WICKED, deepening the mystery.
Thomas confides the worsening situation in the Glade: vanished sun, gray sky, and no weekly supplies. Before they can parse it, Newt, Alby, and others arrive. Teresa coolly admits she escaped the med-jacks by kicking one (Jeff) and climbing out a window. Alby demands answers about who Thomas and Teresa are and what they’ve done, pressing Teresa about triggering the Ending.
As tensions rise, Alby berates Thomas for not noticing the time. Thomas checks his watch and realizes the catastrophe: the Doors haven’t closed. The chapter ends with the unprecedented failure of the walls to seal, escalating danger for everyone in the Glade.
