Chapter 52

Overview

After Thomas proposes entering the Griever Hole, Newt ejects him from the Gathering but decides to champion the plan, aiming to go at night. Thomas, burdened by guilt, resolves to proceed. Through telepathy, Teresa agrees, and together they prepare emotionally for a dangerous attempt that could end the Grievers and open an exit.

Summary

Amid heated arguments at the Gathering, Newt pulls Thomas outside, saying the Keepers must deliberate without him. Thomas insists the Griever Hole plan is their only escape, even volunteering himself as a potential sacrifice. Newt rejects Thomas’s martyrdom, yet admits he believes Thomas and will push the plan to fight rather than be picked off.

Newt adds that if he convinces the Keepers, they should go at night when many Grievers might be out of the Hole. He proposes leaving that very night to prevent more deaths, then returns to the meeting. Thomas, reeling, sits by the Box and worries about Alby’s mention of the Flare, burned earth, and disease, questioning the world beyond but seeing no alternative.

Thomas reaches out telepathically to Teresa and outlines the plan: enter the Griever Hole, use the code, and open a way out. Teresa has no better option and, despite doubts, agrees. They both accept the likely horror ahead but affirm the need to try.

Teresa joins Thomas on the bench. He recounts the plan and Newt’s night timeline, and admits his fear and guilt over his role in designing the Maze. Teresa reassures him that fear is human. They sit in tense quiet, holding hands, bracing for the attempt that may begin that night.
