Chapter 54

Overview

On the eve of their planned escape, the Gladers eat a final meal and steel themselves for battle. Thomas reassures Chuck despite expecting casualties, and Newt rallies forty-one armed boys. With Minho’s terse pep talk and Thomas’s plan set, they charge into the Maze toward the Griever Hole.

Summary

As Door-closing time approaches, Frypan serves a last meal to sustain the Gladers through the night. Thomas sits with Chuck, who seeks comfort by joking about his nickname and claims he isn’t scared. Thomas, privately expecting deaths, promises again to get Chuck home and tries to project hope.

Gathering at the West Door, Thomas notes Alby’s uneasy isolation and worries about Alby’s stability. He joins Teresa and Minho to review the plan for entering the code in the Griever Hole. Minho warns Thomas that the plan must work, while Teresa admits anxiety; Thomas suppresses doubts about his recovered memories.

Newt announces there are forty-one Gladers and reiterates the objective: fight through to the Hole so Thomas can enter the code and confront the Creators. Minho offers a blunt pep talk—“Be careful. Don’t die.”—drawing strained humor from the tense crowd.

Newt’s rallying cry ignites shouts and battle calls, giving Thomas a surge of courage amid fear and responsibility for Chuck and Teresa. Armed with makeshift weapons, including Thomas’s spear-knife, the group—Alby included—sprints into the Maze’s dark corridors, committing to the assault on the Griever Hole.
