Chapter 48

Overview

Thomas awakens from the Changing after three days, learning Grievers have been taking one Glader each night, including Zart. Through telepathy with Teresa, he affirms the Maze can’t be solved and that everything is a test. Thomas demands a Gathering, promising a dangerous escape plan that will trigger the final trial.

Summary

Thomas regains consciousness after the agony of the Changing, with Chuck at his side. Disoriented and sore, he learns he has been out for three days and that the Gladers moved him between the Homestead and the Slammer for safety. Chuck reports the nightly Griever attacks continue and that Zart is among the victims.

Thomas contacts Teresa telepathically. They acknowledge that their past with the Creators involved harming the Gladers, and Thomas admits the Maze cannot be solved. He hints at a grim plan that might cost lives but could offer their only escape, postponing details until a Gathering so he won’t have to repeat himself.

Newt arrives, shocked by Thomas’s quick recovery and torn between admiration and anger over Thomas’s self-stinging. Pressed for answers, Thomas explains his restored insight: the entire ordeal is a deliberate test, designed to weed out the weak, push hope to the brink, and measure persistence under escalating variables—Teresa’s arrival and the shutdown being the final setup.

Thomas insists on convening the Gathering immediately. He states that the Creators intended them to escape, that the Maze itself offers no direct solution, and that the group must attempt a perilous final move as the last phase of the trials begins.
