Chapter 51
Overview
Alby denounces Thomas, then breaks down and confesses he burned the Maps after remembering a devastated world and the Flare. Minho backs Thomas’s plan to escape through the Griever Hole despite the risks. The Keepers argue, and Thomas proposes exploiting the Grievers’ one-kill limit by sacrificing himself to let others enter the code.
Summary
Alby explodes at Thomas, accusing him of being a traitor for having helped design the Maze and insisting the Gladers can’t fight a horde of Grievers. Thomas defends himself, reminding Alby he saved Alby’s life. Minho undercuts Alby’s theory by pointing out Thomas nearly died in the Maze.
Alby’s anger collapses into despair; he confesses he burned the Maps and staged his head injury to deflect suspicion. He explains that the memories from the Changing showed a ruined world, scorched lands, and a disease called the Flare—worse than dying in the Maze. He declares it’s better to die than return.
Minho rejects Alby’s defeatism and sides with Thomas, choosing to fight regardless. Newt tries to steady the group as the Keepers argue; Frypan derides the plan as suicidal. Thomas outlines the escape: reach the Griever Hole at the Cliff, hold off the Grievers long enough to enter the code, then confront the Creators.
Newt questions whether they can survive the Grievers massing at the Cliff. Thomas reveals a final premise: the Changing was a variable for life inside the Glade, and the Grievers appear programmed to kill only one per night. He argues the Creators designed the trial to be survivable, implying one person must draw the kill.
Winston objects to sacrificing someone. Thomas, accepting the moral cost and the necessity to give the others a chance, volunteers himself to be the sacrifice so the group can rush the Griever Hole and enter the code.
