Chapter 4
Overview
Thomas confirms the Glade sits at the center of a vast maze whose Doors grind shut each night. He witnesses weary Runners return and vanish into a fortified building, deepening the mystery. The nightly closure raises the stakes, suggesting the Doors either imprison the Gladers or guard them from external threats.
Summary
Thomas waits by a tree for Chuck, studying the Glade’s layout and noting a windowless concrete building with a heavy iron door near the Box. Chuck brings food, easing Thomas’s isolation. Disturbed by Ben’s condition, Thomas presses Chuck for answers and notices strange patterns along the wall openings.
Determined to learn more, Thomas heads for the eastern gap. Chuck warns that the Doors are about to close, but Thomas doubts the walls can move. At the East Door, Thomas sees holes and rods that suggest a sliding mechanism and realizes the openings are actual Doors.
Runners return from the passages outside, exhausted, and enter the concrete building, shutting the iron door behind them. Chuck slips and calls the outside area a “maze,” confirming Thomas’s suspicion that they live inside a giant labyrinth.
A thunderous boom signals the Doors closing. Thomas watches in shock as the right walls on all four sides grind left and seal, rods locking into holes. Claustrophobia surges, then ebbs into a tense calm once the Doors finish closing.
As night approaches, Thomas weighs whether the Doors imprison the Gladers or protect them from threats in the maze. Fear returns, and at Chuck’s urging, Thomas heads to bed, resolved to learn more despite the secrecy.
