Chapter 47
Overview
Thomas endures the Changing after deliberately being stung and given the Serum. In a sensory void, a whirlwind of mist engulfs him and triggers the return of memories. The experience is overwhelming and agonizing, marking the costly threshold to knowledge that may help decode the Maze.
Summary
Thomas enters the Changing with no sense of time or sensation, suspended in darkness like his first memory of the Box but stripped of all touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste. Fear ebbs into curiosity and then boredom as the emptiness stretches on, emphasizing his isolation.
A distant wind breaks the void, followed by a towering funnel of white mist that appears far away and rapidly closes in. The unseen gale tears past Thomas, pulling at his clothes and hair as the spinning cyclone expands until it fills his vision.
The white vortex finally engulfs Thomas. As the mist consumes him, memories surge into his mind, confirming his goal for getting stung and taking the Serum. The rush of recollection comes at a terrible cost: everything else collapses into intense, all-consuming pain.
