Chapter 14
Overview
Alby leads a grim Banishment of Ben for attempting to kill Thomas, fixing a leather collar to a pole and forcing Ben into the Maze as the Doors close. The ceremony hardens Glader order and justice, deepens Thomas’s guilt and isolation, and underscores the lethal stakes of breaking rules.
Summary
As the Gladers assemble at dusk, Alby secures a leather collar around Ben’s neck, attaching it to a long pole. Ben pleads for mercy, claiming the Changing drove him mad and that he never meant to kill Thomas. Thomas, wracked by guilt and fear of suspicion, wants the ordeal ended.
Alby pronounces the sentence: Banishment for Ben’s attempted murder of Thomas. Ten Keepers, including Newt, Minho, and Winston, take positions along the pole. Despite Ben’s escalating pleas, the Gladers avert their eyes, signaling collective resolve to enforce order.
As the East Door rumbles shut, Alby commands the Keepers to push. Ben is dragged toward the Maze, screaming and fighting the collar. The Keepers overpower him, forcing him beyond the threshold just as the walls near closure.
With a final turn to face the Gladers, Ben’s frantic, feral appearance shocks Thomas. Alby orders a hold; at the last second the front Keeper detaches the pole extension, leaving Ben outside. The Doors slam shut, cutting off Ben’s screams. Thomas, overwhelmed, cries, burdened by responsibility and the stark reality of Glader justice.
