Chapter 34

Thomas wakes to shouts and a lifeless, slate-gray sky. Realizing the sun hasn’t simply disappeared, he concludes the sky is fabricated and that the Glade is an artificial environment. The other Gladers panic, while Thomas processes Teresa’s mental message from the night before: she triggered the Ending.

Chuck asks Thomas what “broken” means, but Thomas withholds his suspicions to avoid alarming everyone or exposing his mind-link with Teresa. The vanished sun convinces Thomas that something fundamental has changed, likely tied to Teresa’s warning.

Minho arrives and insists training continues, reasoning that if the sun is gone, survival urgency rises. Thomas and Minho quickly prepare and enter the Maze under the dim gray light, Thomas still debating whether to tell anyone about Teresa’s message.

Soon after entering, Minho spots a Griever sitting oddly still. They hide, observe, then give cautious chase when it disappears around corners. For several turns they glimpse it retreating deeper into the Maze, until the corridors open to the hallway ending at the Cliff.

At the Cliff, Thomas and Minho stop as the Griever digs in its spikes, rolls to the very edge, and launches into the gray void beyond, vanishing from sight. The inexplicable behavior, paired with the artificial sky, signals that the Maze’s rules are changing and that the “Ending” may have begun.
