Chapter 50
Overview
Thomas confesses that he and Teresa helped design the Maze and are telepathic, asserting they were forced by the Creators. The Keepers refrain from blaming him and demand the escape plan.
Thomas reveals the code must be entered at a computer beyond the Cliff—the Griever Hole—triggering a final, deadly confrontation.
Summary
In the tense Gathering, Thomas hesitates before revealing the truth about himself and Teresa. He explains that those who endured the Changing recognize him because he and Teresa were involved with the Creators from the beginning, though against their will. The Keepers react with shock and skepticism.
Pressed by Newt and Minho, Thomas admits that he and Teresa helped design the Maze and that they share a telepathic ability the Creators exploited. Thomas argues this may be part of the Variables and that he needed the Changing to remember enough to guide them. He stresses that the Creators, not he and Teresa, are to blame.
Expecting anger, Thomas instead finds reluctant acceptance. Newt redirects blame to the Creators, and Minho urges Thomas to present the escape. Thomas outlines that there is a hidden computer station where the code will open an exit and shut down the Grievers—but reaching it will trigger the final test.
When Alby questions the location, Thomas insists it’s somewhere they have never searched. Under pressure, he reveals the destination: they must go over the Cliff into the Griever Hole, knowing all the Grievers will converge on them as they attempt to enter the code.
