Chapter 3
Overview
Thomas meets Chuck, glimpses a Beetle Blade, and hears alarming terms: Grievers, stings, Serum, and the Changing. Gally confronts Thomas, claiming prior knowledge of him. Defying orders, Thomas sees Ben’s gruesome post-sting state before Alby ejects him, raising the stakes and deepening the mystery of his past.
Summary
Shaken by screams from the dilapidated building, Thomas spots a metallic Beetle Blade in a tree. A young boy, Chuck, identifies it and introduces himself as the previous Newbie. As more screams echo, Chuck explains that Ben is sick but will survive if he gets the Serum, hinting at Griever stings and the ominous Changing.
Thomas, frustrated by ignorance and memory loss, learns he’s likely sixteen and bristles at Chuck’s shaky guidance. Determined to get answers, he heads into the shack despite warnings, where a hostile boy, Gally, blocks him. Gally accuses Thomas of being suspicious and claims he has “seen” Thomas during the Changing.
Provoked, Thomas pushes past the taunts and goes upstairs to find Alby and Newt tending Ben. He briefly sees Ben’s body ravaged by green-veined cords, bruises, hives, and frantic eyes, confirming the horror of a Griever sting. Alby slams the door and threatens Thomas, ordering him out and forbidding further intrusion.
Humiliated and terrified, Thomas retreats downstairs, ignoring gawkers and Gally’s jeers. Outside, he asks Chuck to get him away from the others. Chuck offers food and help, while Thomas reels from the revelation of Grievers, the Serum, and the Changing, unsettled by Gally’s claim that Thomas has been seen before.
