Chapter 12

Overview

Minho, a leading Runner, returns to the Glade early and utterly exhausted. After tense banter with Thomas and Alby, Minho refuses to explain until Alby arrives with water. He then reveals a shocking discovery: a dead Griever in the Maze, a revelation that could change everything the Gladers believe.

Summary

Thomas rushes to help an older boy who collapses at the Gate, realizing the Runner needs immediate aid. He calls for Alby and Newt, then kneels beside the Runner, who identifies Thomas as the new arrival. When Alby arrives demanding answers, the Runner—Minho—insists on water first, sparking a sharp exchange.

While waiting, Minho mocks titles and teases Thomas, revealing he was among the first Gladers and often needles Newbies. They briefly discuss the comatose girl and the note that no more Newbies will come; Thomas denies recognizing her. Minho hints he found something important but refuses to repeat himself until Alby returns.

Minho admits he sprinted back faster than usual, emphasizing urgency. Alby returns with water, grants Thomas permission to listen, and presses for answers. Only then does Minho, still exhausted but composed, deliver the revelation: he discovered a dead Griever in the Maze.
