Chapter 25

Overview

At the Council, Minho forcefully defends Thomas’s actions in the Maze and formally proposes Thomas as Keeper of the Runners. The debate turns violent when Minho humiliates Gally, who storms out, denounces Newt’s leadership, and vows to stop Thomas, even kill him. The stakes and divisions in the Glade intensify.

Summary

The Council falls silent as Minho nominates Thomas to be Keeper of the Runners. Gally denounces the idea and demands Minho be removed from the Council. The Keepers argue until Newt restores order and demands a clear defense of the proposal.

Minho details Thomas’s courage and initiative: stepping into the Maze at night to help Alby and Minho, pushing Alby up the wall despite inexperience, and diverting Grievers to protect Alby. He argues that Thomas’s instincts and resolve surpass those of veteran Runners, dismissing the rule-breaking criticism as ignorance of context.

Gally interrupts repeatedly, belittling Thomas’s feats. Minho calls out Gally’s hypocrisy and lack of Runner experience. The confrontation escalates; Gally threatens Minho, who shoves him, knocking him down and pinning him until Newt and Winston pull Minho away.

Raging, Gally retreats toward the exit, condemns Newt’s leadership, and warns that things will change. Before leaving, he targets Thomas directly, citing visions from the Changing and vowing to stop whatever Thomas came for—even kill him if necessary. He slams the door, leaving the Council shaken and the Glade’s divisions laid bare.
